A couple of hours later, we walked into my parents’ house to the smell of delicious food cooking in the kitchen where we found my mom. Mom smiled brightly when she saw us. She wiped her hands on her apron and came to give us each a big hug.

“I am happy you two could join us for lunch,” Mom said. “I wish Zane could have come.”

“He’s working. You know how he is,” Sophia said, going to grab the extra apron to help my mom finish up lunch.

“He’s always working. Natasha was just complaining about the fact that you two do not come home enough to visit.”

She gave me a pointed stare that I choose to ignore. I opened the fridge to grab something to drink and left my mom and Sophia in the kitchen to talk and cook. I did not need to stay to listen to my mom try to guilt me for having a life. I found my dad in the living room with the TV on some 24-hour news channel. He wasn’t much for sports but could talk my ear off about politics.

“Hey Dad,” I said, sitting down on the couch.

“Hey son,” he said. “I’m glad you came for a visit today. I was getting tired of your mom and Natasha complaining about it.”

“We visit at least two or three times a month,” I stated.

“Not lately. You really should do better with coming back home.”

I drained half of my water before responding. “I’m dating someone new and work has been busy.”

“Someone new? Who is the lucky lady?”

“Her name’s Wren, and she lives with me and Zane.”

He furrowed his bushy brows. He looked confused as he tried to pick his words carefully. “Is that smart?” he eventually asked.

“Probably not, but we decided to do it anyway.”

He nodded and turned his attention back to the TV. I thought that was the end of that, but he turned back to me.

“Don’t tell your mother, unless you want to sit through an hours-long lecture.”

“I won’t tell her if you won’t.”

He chuckled and asked me if I’d been following the news lately. I groaned but that did not stop him from giving me a play by play of what was going on the TV. I pretended to listen, nodding every few minutes and stared at the TV. I was happy when Mom called us to the table. Having Sophia there took the attention away from me just as I’d hoped. Since she loved talking to my mom, I didn’t feel too bad using her like that. Her parents, Natasha and David, came over in the middle of the meal, and I knew it was going to be late when Sophia and I headed home.
